Blasts shake Homs as #Syria rebels hit back

BEIRUT — Blasts rocked the flashpoint city of Homs on Sunday as Syria’s regime pressed its assault on protest hubs, while rebels attacked a military base in Damascus province, activists and monitors said.

There was “heavy shelling of Khaldiyeh, Hamidiyeh and Old Homs neighbourhoods by the regime’s army, and explosions shook the whole city,” the Local Coordination Committees said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitoring group, said in a statement that three people were wounded in the Homs district of Safsafa.

In the city of Hama to the north, the Observatory reported that army shelling killed one civilian in the neighbourhood of Murk.

And in the southern town of Nawa, “tanks have entered the main streets, and heavy gunfire by regime forces is reported,” said the LCC, the main opposition activist group inside Syria.

Nawa is in the southern Daraa province, where the popular uprising against President Bashar al-Assad’s iron-fisted rule erupted in March 2011. Monitors say 9,100 people have been killed since then.

The Observatory said an explosion hit a bridge in the Daraa region of Lajat where many army deserters are reported to be.

In the north, near the border with Turkey, rockets were fired into the town of Aazaz as helicopters flew overhead, the LCC said in a statement sent to AFP in Beirut.

It added that rebel fighters of the Free Syrian Army blocked a highway used by the military for reinforcements and supplies to Aazaz, the scene of fierce clashes for the past few weeks.

In Damascus province, rebels fired rocket-propelled grenades in a dawn attack on a military facility in Nabak where ambulances rushed to the scene, said the Observatory.

Mohammed al-Shami, an activist, said fighting erupted at night between soldiers and army deserters and continued into the early hours of Sunday, including in Douma, a hot spot on the capital’s northeastern outskirts.

In eastern Deir Ezzor, the security forces conducted a search and arrest operation, according to the Observatory.

Elsewhere, the official SANA news agency said that an “armed terrorist group” attacked a gas pipeline in the eastern region of Bir al-Jouf.

Nurredin al-Abdo, an activist in northwestern Idlib province, said night-time demonstrations were held across the region, notably in the town of Saraqeb, where monitors reported deadly clashes on Saturday.

At least 28 civilians were killed across Syria on Saturday, including two women and two children in the central province of Homs, according to the Britain-based Observatory.

Sixteen soldiers and two deserters were also killed, it said, taking the day’s toll to 46.

As the year-old conflict showed no signs of abating, rebel fighters set up a military council to unify their ranks and political opposition leaders called a meeting of all dissident groups to forge common objectives.

The latest violence came as UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan was in Moscow to seek the vital backing of Russia, a key ally of the Syrian regime, for his plan to end the bloodshed.

There are growing signs that Moscow is beginning to lose patience with Assad, despite his commitment to massive new Russian arms purchases and the granting of key naval access to the Mediterranean.

(CNN) — At least one member of the Syrian security forces was killed and nine others were injured following violent clashes with army defectors in Daraa province, opposition activists said Thursday.

The clashes occurred on a highway near the town of Khirbet Ghazaly, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Also in Daraa, three people were injured in the town of Nawa, including an 11-year-old child, when government forces randomly fired at their homes, the Observatory said.

Three explosions rocked the town of Almaseefra and heavy gunfire is being directed at people’s homes by regime troops, the group said. A young man died in the town of Seeda from injuries received under torture by government security forces, it added.

Elsewhere, a large group of Syrian security forces raided the suburb of Douma, in Damascus province, early Thursday, days after loyalist forces pulled out after heavy clashes with defectors, the Observatory said.

Security forces are setting up checkpoints in residential streets there, the group said, but have not met violent resistance so far.

Meanwhile, Syrian state television reported that mass pro-government rallies were taking place in Damascus, Aleppo, Deir Ezzor and Lattakia on Thursday.

According to the state-run Syrian Arab New Agency (SANA), hundreds of thousands of Syrians from across the country flocked to the capital to join demonstrations in support of President Bashar al-Assad’s government.

The demonstrators have taken to the streets “in rejection of the recent decisions by Arab League Council which are but flagrant violation of the Syrian independence and sovereignty,” the agency reported.

It said the rallies were “an embodiment of the Syrians’ national unity and cohesion, are considered a sharp cry and strong condemnation of the armed terrorist groups’ attacks against their security, stability and unity.”

The Syrian government blames the ongoing violence in the country on terrorist groups and says security forces are only trying to protect civilians.

CNN cannot independently confirm events because the Syrian government restricts access of international media to the country.

The uprising against the regime and the resulting government crackdown have engulfed the country for more than 10 months. The United Nations last month estimated that more than 5,000 people have died since March. The Local Coordination Committees of Syria said Tuesday more than 6,600 deaths have been documented since the unrest began. Avaaz, a global political activist group, said the death toll has exceeded 7,000.

On Wednesday, Syria’s government agreed to a one-month extension of the Arab League monitors’ mission there.

The 22-member Arab League has called on the al-Assad regime to stop violence against civilians, free political detainees, remove tanks and weapons from cities and allow outsiders — including the international news media — to travel freely in Syria.

The league is working on a proposal for al-Assad to transfer power to his vice president following the formation of a national unity government. The plan calls for the government to start talks with the opposition within two weeks and for the formation of a new government within two months. A new constitutional council would follow, as would a plan for parliamentary and presidential elections.

However, six nations from the Gulf Cooperation Council withdrew their observers from the mission this week, citing the continuing bloodshed and the government’s “lack of commitment” to the Arab League proposal.

The council is also calling for the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council — the United States, France, Britain, Russia and China — and other council members to ratchet up pressure on the regime.

It wants the Security Council to support the Arab League’s Syrian initiative by passing a resolution.

A draft U.N. resolution on Syria obtained by CNN calls on “all states” to take steps similar to those the Arab League undertook in November when it imposed sanctions on Syrian authorities.

Russia, a Syrian ally, has been seen as an obstacle in developing a tough U.N. resolution toward the al-Assad regime because it has veto power as a permanent council member.

#Syria releases Iranian prisoners to give room for political detainees: Iranian sources

By Hadi Tarfi
Al Arabiya

The escalation of protests calling for the ouster of the regime and the subsequent increase in the number of political detainees in the country necessitated providing more space in Syrian prisons. For this reason, all Iranian prisoners were sent back home.

Thousands of Iranian prisoners serving jail sentences mainly on drugs and riot charges have been released by the Syrian authorities and returned home, said a source that spoke to Al Arabiya on condition of anonymity.

“A convict who was handed a life sentence for drug dealing has recently returned to Iran and confirmed that all other Iranian prisoners were released and are all now back in Iran,” the source told Al Arabiya.

According to the source, this unexpected step aims at emptying Syrian prisons that are now ready to receive as many revolutionaries and political activists as possible.

Syrian opposition statistics confirm that the number of political detainees has so far reached 100,000, the majority of which kept in deplorable conditions.

The number of prisoners confirmed by U.N. Human Rights Commissioner Nafy Bilari was 14,000.

According to the Syrian Human Rights Observatory, the detainees are usually subjected to extreme torture and many of them die in the process and some are thrown in the streets.

The observatory announced finding Saturday the bodies of four Syrian citizens, who were arrested Friday night by security forces and regime thugs, thrown in the streets of the city of al-Hawla in the governorate of Homs. The bodies showed signs of torture.

A fifth citizen, the observatory added, was also found in a critical condition.

The observatory called upon the Arab League observers’ committee to head to Hula and document the flagrant human rights violations committed by Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Arrests of Syrians involved in anti-regime protests, the observatory stated, continued in several parts of the country.

According to the observatory, army forces in tanks and armored vehicles stormed the town of Basar al-Harir in the southwestern governorate of Daraa looking for dissident army officers hiding there. Those officers, said the observatory, will most likely face the same fate as other dissidents who were killed Monday in Jabal al-Zawya in the northwestern governorate of Idlib.

The observatory also announced Friday the death of two citizens in the city of Nawa in Daraa, one of whom is a 15-year-old, in addition to 11 in Homs, two in the city of Duma in the Rif Dimashq governorate, three in the city of Hama, and three in Idlib as well as one in the governorate of Deir az-Zor.

In addition, at least 44 were killed and more than 150 injured in the explosion of two booby-trapped cars in front of two intelligence buildings in the heart of the capital Damascus. The regime claimed the attacks were carried out by al-Qaeda while the opposition accused the regime of planning them.
