#Syria, Rebels gear up for ‘zero hour’ in Aleppo

BEIRUT/ALEPPO, Syria: Several thousand Syrian rebels launched Thursday what they said would be a decisive battle for control of the strategic northern city of Aleppo as the Syrian government warned it was “game over.” “Tonight, Aleppo will be ours or we will be defeated,” Abu Furat, a rebel commander said.

As they announced the preparations, Syrian authorities sent text messages over cellphones nationwide with a message for rebels fighting President Bashar Assad’s regime: “Game over.”

The messages signed by the Syrian Arab Army also urged the rebels to surrender their weapons and warned that the countdown to evict foreign fighters had begun.

The battle cries came a day after rebels bombed a military command center in Damascus and after more than 300 people were killed nationwide Wednesday in what the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said was the bloodiest day of the 18-month conflict so far.

An AFP correspondent saw dozens of rebels grouping in Aleppo’s northern Izaa quarter and firing mortars as they spoke to other groups by walkie-talkie.

In a video posted on YouTube in the name of the most important rebel unit, the Al-Tawhid Brigade, a man in civilian clothing clutching a walkie-talkie is seen giving instructions.

“Today the attack against Bashar’s army began on all fronts,” he says, referring to Assad’s forces.

“God willing, today’s battle in Aleppo will be decisive.”

“Don’t kill any prisoners,” he orders. “Disarm them and hand them over to the security committee of the revolution. Each man to his post.”

The Observatory reported fierce combat in the early evening in the districts of Izaa and Saif al-Dawla in the southwest, involving “hundreds of rebel fighters.”

Aleppo has seen raging clashes since July, when rebels launched an offensive to capture the commercial capital. After some early successes, the rebel campaign slowed because of a shortage of ammunition.

At least seven civilians were killed Thursday in the northern metropolis as troops pummeled districts across the southwest and the east, the Britain-based Observatory said.

The violence came after a car bomb exploded at an army checkpoint overnight in the northwest province of Idlib, about 25 kilometers south of Aleppo on the highway to Damascus. Rebels then attacked the checkpoint and fierce clashes raged, the Observatory said.

In what appeared to be the same attack, a military source said clashes erupted overnight at a checkpoint in the same area after a minibus exploded.

“When we saw the bus with just one driver and no one else in it, we thought it was suspicious and told him to stop.” “He didn’t and when we shot the driver the bus veered off the road and exploded,” the source told AFP. A large rebel force then attacked the checkpoint, said the source, who added that the fighting lasted until 7:30 am when the rebels withdrew.

The Observatory also reported that unidentified attackers blew up an oil pipeline in the northeast province of Hasaka, Syria’s main oil-producing region.

In Idlib province, five civilians, including four children, died in army bombardment of Khan Sheikhun, according to the Observatory.

Activist footage posted on YouTube showed pandemonium in the town, as men formed lines in a race to move chunks of rubble and the crowd began shouting as a small limp girl was lifted up and handed to a grey-haired man.

The authenticity of the video could not be verified independently.

At least 59 people – 38 civilians, 16 soldiers and five rebels – were killed nationwide Thursday, according to an early toll from the Observatory.

Rebels and government aligned forces are now locked in a stalemate after 18 months of conflict. Activists say the death toll since the uprising against Assad began in March last year has topped 30,000, with nearly two-thirds of the casualties reported in the past five months.

International diplomacy has failed to end the crisis. World leaders meeting at the United Nations this week expressed concern at the violence but are deadlocked over their response to the conflict. Qatar, one of several Sunni Muslim powers which supports the rebels, called for a no-fly zone to provide a safe haven inside Syria. French President Francois Hollande also called on the global body to protect what he called “liberated zones” under rebel control.

But there is little chance of securing a Security Council mandate for such action given the opposition of veto-wielding members Russia and China.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday that Russia, China and Iran’s stance on Syria was letting a massacre go on unabated.

“The main source of disappointment is Russia. Let alone raising its voice against Syria, it stands by the massacre,” Erdogan said in an interview broadcast live on Turkish television station NTV.

“China stands by Russia, and although [Chinese President] Hu Jintao had told me they wouldn’t veto the plan [for a safe zone] for a third time, they did at the U.N. vote,” Erdogan said.

He described Iran’s position on the 18-month-old uprising against Assad as “impossible to understand.”

“Assad’s days are numbered,” Erdogan said. “He may have to leave soon, he can’t resist this anymore.”

Click the title to find out more how you can help Syria by participating in ZERO HOUR. Below is an explanation:

Revolutionary brothers in Syria

Peace, Mercy and Blessings of God be upon you all

We inform you that, thank God Almighty, we have been coordinating with many activists inside the occupied Syria and have come to an agreement to start the promotion of Zero Hour across the Syrian channels. Here, one may wonder:

What does “Zero Hour” mean?

Zero Hour is the hour that will be determined later with your help. In this hour, people will come out in mass demonstration in every Syrian city, village, rural area, countryside. No one will remain in their house during this hour. It will include all children, youth, old men and women. No one will remain other than the sick that is not able to stand.

In this hour, we will call everyone to demonstrate in all the main squares. We will come out in the millions to all of the criminal Assad’s palaces. We will come out in the millions to the Umayyad Square in Damascus. The floor will shaker under Assad and his supporters’ feet. It will be a golden opportunity that needs to be taken to our advantage.

We invite all members of the Assad Army to defect in masses from this regime that uses torturing techniques, done by the hands of Assad and his regime. We invite all security guards of weapon storages to open the doors to the Revolutionary rebels. We invite all honorable pilots to defend against the regime of injustice and oppression and aggression. We invite them to hit the regime’s power supply.

We invite all artillery soldiers to direct the barrel of their gun toward Assad’s battalions so they can taste what our people have tasted in all parts of Syria. We invite all that lead the tanks to defect and ride, with their tanks, to the Presidential Palace and destroy it to rubble and debris, just as his gang did to Baba Amr, and all affected areas of Syria.

As for our heroes in the Free Syrian Army, we say to them:

Make of this hour as an end to the unjust rule that has been perched upon our hearts for forty years. The unjust rule that has tired us and has made us taste the agony and suffering every hour.

Attack them with your rifles from underground and come down upon them from the sky with stones. Instill fear upon their hearts and strike them above their necks and hit them from each building.

Anyone who stands with the regime is your target during this hour, including all airports, police stations, military barracks, the Ministry of Defense, the Central Bank, military colleges and
Anyone who stands with the regime is your target during this hour, including all airports, police stations, military barracks, the Ministry of Defense, the Central Bank, military colleges and military recruitment centers.  Strike the intelligence headquarters and all its branches. Strike State Security Centers and Military Intelligence Agencies. Blow up any bridges that allow any cowardly armored vehicles to pass. Mine the roads that their cars ride upon and make it into rubble.

Make the Zero Hour an hour that causes remorse in Assad and his regime. Make them wish for death.

In the Zero Hour, Sunnis, Alawis, Christians, Druze, Shiite, Yazidis, Ismailis, and Kurds will stand united against the tyrant Bashar al-Assad.

In the Zero Hour, Syria will return to its previous state of safety and security for all.

Zero Hour continues to impose the duty of a strong worldwide campaign on us. A campaign that reaches the Syrian people entirely and drags people to participation in this historical event. We call upon all our revolutionary brothers and sisters to join us.

We urge you to record videos in which you confirm your support and participation in this project to us and encourage others to take part as well. We request that you speak with a strong tireless tone. We want you to allow the deaf to hear us! We want you to move stones and boulders with your voices! We will compile your videos into programs that will give more details about Zero Hour and encourage others to take part.

Ideas and proposals for videos:

  • Portray activists and revolutionaries explaining the situation in Syria and telling people of the criminal acts of the regime and calling the people of Damascus and Aleppo to come out on Zero Hour
  • Photograph the families of victims, including women, children, and elders, while they are calling for honest and brave Syrians to come out during Zero Hour
  • Photograph army battalions of defected soldiers from the Free Syrian Army where they encourage Syrian army officers to split collectively for Zero Hour to support and protect the oppressed people of Syria

The success of Zero Hour depends on our unity. The implementation of this very important task is a requirement for every free Syrian in order for this to work.

Thank you.

Syria’s Zero Hour — ‘Make Them Wish for Death’ #Syria

11/04/12 David Kempa

Syrian activists moved by this month’s increased violence and frustrated by international inaction put forth a call to action Monday in the form of Zero Hour, an agreement among the people of Syria to take to the streets at an undisclosed date and time in one cohesive, collective thrust against Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s regime and the violence that has taken place since the Middle Eastern nation’s uprising began in March 0f 2011.

An undisclosed opposition group opened dialogue with anti-Assad organizations across Syria and abroad in recent weeks, from the Local Coordination Committees of Syria to the Free Syrian Army, garnering support and raising awareness for Zero Hour.

They then released the Zero Hour statement over the weekend, and its English translation on Monday, encouraging men, women and children across Syria to take to the main plazas when the call is put forth, asking those in Syria’s armed forces to defect and join the opposition, and sending a particularly strong message to the movement’s armed opposition, the Free Syrian Army:

Attack them with your rifles from underground and come down upon them from the sky with stones. Instill fear upon their hearts and strike them above their necks and hit them from each building.

“It’s going to be very soon,” said Rafif Jouejati, the English-language spokesperson of the Local Coordination Committees of Syria, a network of committees peppered throughout Syria and in neighboring countries dedicated to the opposition movement.

Noting that it was not the LCC that has come up with Zero Hour, and declining, for safety reasons, to name the group that did, Jouejati also said that opposition groups across the board are coalescing behind the idea.

The precise time and date of Zero Hour remains a mystery to the general public, but in light of Assad’s failure to comply with a ceasefire agreement recently reached with the United Nations, Syrian opposition groups are growing increasingly poised to move forward with overt displays of dissent.

One of the groups raising awareness for Zero Hour is Twitter Users for Syria, whose handle @SyriaCampaigns leads two-hour hashtag drives each week on Twitter in order to make topics related to Syria trend globally and grab the world’s attention.

According to one of the group’s founders, Nora Basha, a member of the Syrian opposition in Egypt contacted Twitter Users for Syria with a request to help raise awareness of Zero Hour through one of their Twitter campaigns. In response, Twitter Users for Syria held a Monday campaign this week, using #SyriaZeroHour as its hashtag.

Syria Campaigns - #SyriaZeroHour

Basha said that support for Zero Hour has begun to spring up on YouTube as well, with one channel highlighting clips of ”some of the most influential, the biggest revolutionaries from Syria, encouraging people to join Zero Hour.”

As organization for Zero Hour continues to ramp up, Syrians and Syrian-Americans have grown increasingly frustrated with international officials’ continued attempts to reason with Syrian president Bashar al-Assad. While Assad agrees to a ceasefire on the global stage, events in his nation tell a drastically different story, with well over 1,000 deaths reported by the LCC in the past ten days.

“It’s escalating not just in the number of dead,” said an exhausted Jouejati on Monday, “but the level of violence and the level of brutality. And some of the methods of torture. The lack of humanity is just so apparent. It’s almost indescribable. Everything is an escalation.”
